A lunch break visit to a Goodwill turned out to be a total bust, so I stopped at another on my way home (when you have the thrifting fever, there is little you can do to stop it). I found this piece of pottery for a nice price - the color is amazing! And for the bottom:

halloween.1979
I said to Steve today, "I think I have a new thing to collect." He turned white and fell over. Just kidding! But I do have something new that I'm looking out for (and that I have been, actually). Retro jack-o-lanterns!

There's a story in all of this. Steve and I have the same birthday, October 29. It's close to Halloween, so, how can I not love jack-o's? Pumpkins are symbols of birthdays to me - and Fall, my favorite time of year. In fact, this very jack-o-lantern was made 10/15/1979, mere days before my birth (does that mean I'm retro?!). So it's a little kitschy, but I'm smitten for his toothy grin.

As we're in the process of moving, pardon the mess!

This pretty-in-pink number came from a thrift shop that is so near and dear to me, I couldn't scoff at the price (I used to volunteer full-time for this particular nonprofit). The woman working the register leaned over to me after she wrapped this up and said all breathy-like, "These are collector items, you know."

This is the second time I've found smaller, square Pyrex in the "wrong" place - it was with the gift items, not the dishes. Teehee. Score for me.

I'm pretty sure that my fence should be wooden and have pickets, but alas, it was free! And it makes a good place to show off tablecloths in the early evening (Cole could care less about the tablecloth - he is looking for the baby ducks that live in the trees!).

Didn't I say something recently about no more dishes? Oh, wait. Steve loves Pyrex. I'm safe!

All in a day's work before noon, I found these Pyrex pieces at three local thrift stores. The treasure hunter in me was delighted. Needless to say, I am...amassing Pyrex. What's so wonderful about it is that it fits inside of itself quite nicely so it doesn't take up too much room in the cupboards. Recently, from the library, I had Pyrex: The Unauthorized Collector's Guide; turns out I should have renewed it! Alas, I can just get it again. I took individual portraits of each piece but all of them together seemed a better fit. Not the greatest photo but it is something!

Funny, I bought these at different times. One of them I bought a few months ago and the other I found a couple of weekends ago...but they're identical, made by Hager USA. When the time is right, I will plant something in either of them. Because that's the thing to do!

100+.solid.cherries
Today, Steve issued an edict: NO. MORE. DISHES! I mean, what happened to the original idea of this blog wherein I'd be buying a lot of furniture and restoring it or giving it a whole new look? That idea probably went south when we bought the last piece of thrifted furniture that we needed, and I can't remember what or when that was. So this is what Solid Cherry has become: a little booth of wares!

I passed my 100th post a few posts back and thought I would celebrate by getting all of my pretties out for shits and giggles. Though I never buy things for a certain color, I see a theme in all of the madness: variations of lighter blues, white, black, and gray. I do use a lot of these dishes, especially on weekend mornings when I am lazy with time. But everything I thrift is something I use in one way or another even if I don't have an immediate purpose for it.

One more thing I have to say - though I've been blogging elsewhere for nearly two years, Solid Cherry feels like home! That's probably because it is. Thanks for stopping by -- and here's to the centennial!

I am going to *pretend* this quilted throw was once made in a prairie farmhouse and kept a younger version of me nice and warm during a bitter cold winter. Do you see what Florida does to a girl? It makes her daydream of the plains! And I have never lived in the plains! Eeek. I'm going to cherish this, no matter how relatively new it could be...it's just the most precious thing I have thrifted in a long, long time.

Happiness is finding five Fiestaware plates by Homer Laughlin...for fifty cents each...and dating them to the 1950s! Take a look at the tablecloth ($3) and gray Fiesta plate up close:

You can tell from the three sagger pin marks on the back of this plate that it isn't contemporary Fiestaware (post 1986)...it's the old stuff!

...They might sell for as much as $8 a piece. Oh, I love to thrift!

Primroses! The texture of these postcards is something I wish you could touch because it is the reason why I bought these...they feel like worn sandpaper.

I love a retro postcard. I used to collect them religiously but over time have used them and so my collection has dwindled considerably...this is the second time(!) I've owned the San Antonio postcard (pictured at bottom)! The postcard on top features the Badlands...where I was nearly a year ago this week!

A Fire King bowl holding some of my favorite things: painted Christmas light bulbs. I'll stash the bulbs for Christmas crafty goodness and use them in some way but the bowl has already made its way into my cupboard!
